Program notes

  1. AppDirect acquired Soul Machines, announced Sept. 28, 2026, its third major acquisition in recent months.
  2. Devs.ai provides access to more than 100 large language models and will integrate the avatar technology.
  3. Soul Machines was co-founded in 2016 by Mark Sagar, a former VFX engineer on 'Avatar' and 'King Kong'.
  4. A recent classroom study found no significant short-term learning gains from AI avatars versus alternatives.
  5. Prior 2026 acquisitions: CCI Network Services in September and PartnerStack in April.

AppDirect acquired Soul Machines, a venture-backed startup building hyper-realistic AI avatars, on Monday — its third major acquisition in roughly five months, following CCI Network Services last week and PartnerStack in April.

The B2B commerce platform provider plans to help channel partners, consultants and businesses deploy interactive AI experiences across sales, service, support and commerce, according to the Sept. 28 announcement. Soul Machines' technology also covers AI-based user and customer experience interfaces, self-service, training and onboarding platforms.

The startup's stack will be integrated with AppDirect's Devs.ai platform, which offers vibe-coding tools, secure workspaces and access to more than 100 large language models. Channel partners will soon be able to access the avatar technology through that platform.

What changes for sellers and support teams?

The pitch is a shift away from prompt-based and text-only workflows. Chris Herd, general manager at Soul Machines, framed the acquisition in an email:

"The value of this technology is that it represents the next step in making AI more intuitive. Instead of relying only on prompts or text-based workflows, businesses can now interact with AI in more natural, conversational ways through text, voice and virtual human interfaces. For partners and advisors, this creates a new way to differentiate in the AI market."

For sales and support organizations, the practical applications sit at the top and bottom of the funnel: customer-facing interfaces for product demos and self-service, plus onboarding and training platforms — stages where teams typically burn the most human hours at scale.

Who built the technology?

Soul Machines was co-founded in 2016 by director and producer Mark Sagar, a former facial technology and visual effects engineer on "Avatar" and "King Kong." The company uses patented autonomous animation to, in Herd's words, "humanize AI" — creating animated digital teammates that can see, hear and respond to prompts in real time.

Sagar argued the economics have only now made the technology viable for broad commercial use: "Until recently, compute costs and latency kept lifelike, real-time AI out of reach for broad commercial adoption. Those barriers are now collapsing and with the integration to Devs.ai, this technology is now available through the channel."

Do AI avatars actually work?

That claim deserves scrutiny. The evidence on lifelike avatars is mixed:

  • A recent study of AI avatars in the classroom found no significant differences in short-term learning gains versus alternatives, and students preferred human teachers.
  • Users have reported the "uncanny valley" effect — the unsettling experience of interacting with not-quite-human avatars.

What AppDirect asserts is a differentiation opportunity for partners. What independent research has measured, at least in education settings, is no short-term learning advantage and a preference for humans. Neither side has published data on avatar performance in B2B sales or support contexts.

A buying spree in context

The Soul Machines deal extends a rapid consolidation pattern for AppDirect:

  • September 2026: CCI Network Services, a telecoms provider, creating a UCaaS and customer experience center of excellence.
  • April 2026: PartnerStack, a relationship management platform targeting the fragmented channel partner ecosystem.
  • September 2026: Soul Machines, adding avatar interfaces to the AI stack.

As AI adoption moves from experimentation to implementation, AppDirect joins many companies racing to build AI interfaces customers and partners trust. Whether lifelike avatars close deals faster than text-based interfaces remains an open empirical question — one partners betting on the platform will effectively test in the market.
